Off-Road Routes is an independent website about off-road driving, 4×4 vehicle setup, recovery gear, trail planning and overlanding. We publish guides for 4×4, SUV and truck owners getting into off-road driving and overlanding, with a focus on preparing vehicles and equipment, recovering safely and planning trips through official sources.
Who we are
Off-Road Routes launched in its current form in 2026 and is run by a small, independent editorial team. We are an online-only publication. We are not owned by, and do not work on behalf of, any manufacturer, brand or retailer, and no company reviews or approves our guides before they are published.
Websites that used the domain name offroadroutes.net in earlier years were run by other people and are not connected to the current site or its content.
What we cover
Our guides are organized into these sections: Off-Road Vehicles, Off-Road Gear, Trail Planning, Recovery and Safety and Vehicle Maintenance. Each guide explains what matters for a given situation, which trade-offs to expect and where its advice stops.
How we research
Our content is written by the Off-Road Routes editorial team. We base our guides on vehicle and equipment manufacturers’ manuals and ratings, official land-management agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the USDA Forest Service and the National Park Service, Tread Lightly! guidance and the National Weather Service, and we link to the source when a guide states a figure or a safety point.
We are clear about the limits of our work. Unless an article explicitly describes our own use of a product, our guides are research-based and are not hands-on product tests. We do not invent test results, ratings or statistics. Read our Editorial Policy and How We Review for details.
Safety and scope
Vehicle recovery can be dangerous: straps, winch lines and shackles can fail under load. Use only rated recovery points and equipment, follow the manufacturer’s ratings and keep bystanders clear. Trail access, closures and permits change; confirm with the land manager. We never claim a route is open or legal to drive unless an official source says so.
